ACT UP to fold if new officers can't be found

A letter from ACT UP board member Joe Carroccio:

I will not be accepting nominations for any position for the upcoming year. It's time for me to move on to other projects and let new blood steer this operation.

I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve our community in a way that best suited my personality and beliefs. It is my sincere hope that my efforts have had a positive impact on how Cleveland and its citizens respond to the AIDS epidemic. If nothing else we certainly got their attention. My experience with ACT UP has been a real education. I learned much about our community, some of which appalled me, but most of which made me proud to be a part of it. I found in myself compassion for others that

my advice if it's needed. I won't be far. And I will always be watching.

Elections February 6

Joe Carroccio

ACT UP Cleveland will be holding open elections for board members on Monday, February 6 at our regular meeting. Anyone who is a member of ACT UP can be an officer. To repeat what a member of ACT UP actually is, it's anyone who has attended three meetings or participated in one demonstration. That's it. Any member can nominate themselves or another member. The responsibilities involved with each position will be discussed

THE AIDS COALITION TO UNLEASH POWER

CLEVELAND

to appreciate how fortunate I am as I witnessed the struggle and hardship that the HIV/AIDS challenged must endure just to survive. Mostly I learned how to control my own rage and channel it into something positive.

I would like to thank the core membership of ACT UP. You know who you are. I love you guys. You have made me proud to be among you. You are fabulous. I would also like to thank the businesses and entertainers that helped keep us going: the bar owners that had bar nights for us and those generous drag queens that were always there to lend a hand.

Finally, I would like to thank you, the public. You may not have liked us, you may have loved us, or you may have hated us but loved what we did. In any case, I made the effort for you; to build a coalition, to let you know that you are not alone, to show you that you can fight, live and love in the face of great tragedy. The resilience of this community, while our lives, our very existence, is threatened, has given me the inspiration to keep going during many difficult times.

As I go on to explore other horizons I carry with me many memories that being a part of this organization has brought me. I'll continue to support ACT UP and maintain con-

at the election meeting. Experience with activism and lobbying are important but not necessary. You can always learn.

If there is no interest from the community to keep ACT UP Cleveland alive, we will be closing the workspace door for the last time on February 28, and ACT UP Cleveland will cease to exist. It is our sincere hope that those who want to continue ACT UP will be ready to do it.

The core group of ACT UP members and the people who were at the workspace every day, will not accept nominations. They have spent the last two years getting the organization off the ground. They need to regain what is left of the life they put aside some two years ago. Besides, they need a rest. This is not to say we are going to disappear. If ACT UP does continue to exist, we will always be available for advice.

So here we are. Are Cleveland area PWAS better off today than before our inception? Do the people living with AIDS and those who care for them need an ACT UP? Do they want one? This is not for the meek. It's rough. The success and rewards come in the form of better care and service for PWAS. If the decision is made to fold, please don't call and ask what happened. If you have to ask, you weren't there-and that's what happened. ✓
